Discussion:
Built in vs Users container

Hello the built in container has all the groups installed by default on
a DC. In the Users container there are also many security groups that
were there by default for example, Domain Admins, Domain Users etc..
Why is it that these 2 mentioned and others are in the Users instead of
in the Built in, what is the difference between the 2 containers ?

The following was quoted from:
Understanding Active Directory Containers
http://www.brighthub.com/computing/windows-platform/articles/33795.aspx#ixzz0S0G7gWRN

Users - Much like how Computers and Servers joined to the domain are
auto-dumped into the Computers container, Users of all levels are
automatically placed inside the Users container.

Builtin - Builtin does much what its name implies. It is the container that
stores default groups, such as Backup Operators, Server Operators, and Group
Policy Creator Owners. These groups are preconfigured with permissions to
perform specific tasks that administrators will often make use of.

I hope that helps!

Hello aconti,

Builtin container contains groups that are defined with domain local scope.
And the Users container contains groups that are defined with global scope
and groups that are defined with domain local scope.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc756898(WS.10).aspx

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc728418(WS.10).aspx

Also keep ino mind that on containers you can't apply GPOs.

Best regards

To add to the other replies - always create your own OU heirarchy, and don't
just use the default containers.

I like something like this>

Domain.local
|
<all the built-in stuff>
|
My Company Name
|
Servers
|
Workstations
|
Users
|
Security Groups
|
Distribution Groups

<you get the picture>

You can also organize things by site, department, etc. - whatever makes the
most sense for you.

You're very welcome.

As an aside, please don't use the horrible Techarena forums to access the
newsgroups.
The interface doesn't quote properly, and people using Techarena often reply
to posts no longer on the news server, so it's unlikely that anyone will
know what they're talking about.

Try using a news client, such as Forte Agent, Thunderbird, or even Outlook
Express, instead. It's a lot easier to do nearly everything that way. You
can mark messages to be watched, filter the views so you can see replies to
your posts easily, and search.

The Microsoft public news server is msnews.microsoft.com and you can
subscribe to as many groups as you like; no authentication is required.

The following is from a post by MVP Malke ...

You're welcome. And I would follow Lanwench's suggestions to move away from
Techarena and post directly to the Microsoft newsgroups. That's where
Techarena posts and pulls newsgroups from anyway, so why not go directly to
the source? It's free. :-)

Sure I will follow your suggestions and try to set it up.

So which news client you would recommend out of the three given ?

Then I need to setup a news account on it with the server bein
msnews.microsoft.com right ?

Then I can post directly from the news client instead from the website
I will have a look at the links you provided to check how can
subscribe to a news feed

Will try to set it up this evening and let you know

Thank yo

You can simply use Outlook Express in XP or Windows Mail in Vista or Windows
7.

You can follow this link for step by step to create a news account. Although
it is for Express, Windows Mail works the same:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/newsgroupsetup.mspx

Then once you've set it up, you can look at all the newsgroups out there.
Look specifically at the ones that start with
microsoft.public.windows.server.<something> and choose from there. You are
currently posting to the microsoft.public.windows.server.active_directory,
so you can subscribe to that one for starters. There is also .networking,
.dns, .general, .and many others. When posting, post to the relevant
newsgroup for your questions. Don't forget to setup a signature.
