Discussion:
Using MS DHCP/DDNS with Mac OS X clients

We've got a hybrid network with 1/2 PC and 1/2 Macs.

When Mac clients use the MS DHCP it's computer name is not registered with
DHCP, the name column is blank, so there is no corresponding entry in DDNS.
Is there a way for MS DHCP to recognize non-Windows client's computer names?
such as linux DHCP clients?

End result I want is for Mac OS X clients to use DHCP and also have their
A-record registered with DDNS.

Thanks

If you turn off "Secure Updates only" on the DNS server, it will allow the
functionality you are looking for.

Tried this but it did not work. The problem is that OS X Mac's do not
automatically register with DDNS so there is no DNS entry for the Mac's.
Also I can't use the usual MS DCHP/DDNS solution because MS DCHP does not
recognize the computer names of OS X Mac's when they give them IP addresses.
aside from writing an applescript with nsupdate, is there a way for the OS X
Mac's to register with MS DDNS?

Thanks for the tip though,
Tadashi

Have you tried changing the properties on the DHCP server to have the
DHCP server update DNS on behalf of the client? In the DHCP console,
right-click the DHCP server object, select the DNS tab, and the choose
"Dynamically update DNS A and PTR records for DHCP clients that do not
request updates (for example, clients running Windows NT 4.0)". (This
wording was taken from a DHCP server running Win2003; the wording may
be different on Win2K.)
