Domain Rename issue

Hello,

I attempted to rename an active directory domain (1 DC). Everything seemed
to go ok..and the new domain was reflected.

Here is what i did:

I ran DCDiag and NetDiag on the DC prior to performing the operation to make
sure the AD was running ok.

THe old domain was AD1.sampledomin.net

I wanted to rename it to sampledomain.local

I ran the rendom tool from a standalone machine (non-DC) and it took all of
the commands ok and uploaded the new name to the DC.

It didn't automatically make the new _msdsc.sampledomain.local dns entry nor
the sampledomain.local domain entry. So I added those to forward lookup
zones. One I did that, I ran a netdiag /fix and it repaired and populated
all the host files for the AD. I ran another netdiag and dcdiag and
everything came back ok.

Now, I have another server that I want to promote to a DC. When I run a
DCpromo and try to promote up, I get an error that "the directory service
cannot perform the requested operation because a domain rename operation is
in progress".

I gave it ample time to replicate all settings...

Im not sure what I can do. Its the AD hosed?

Thx!

How long have you been waiting?

While I have not tried this procedure yet (kinda sad, but just getting to
WIN2003) I have read at least one post in this news group (sorry, can not
remember where it is...I guess I would have to search for it) where one of
the problems was not waiting long enough. What does 'ample time' mean?

Have you finalised the rename? At the end you need to (re) run RENDOM
/CLEAN and then run RENDOM /END. After doing so, all DCs need to be
rebooted.
