Has anyone done a domain rename in a Windows Server 2003
and Exchange 2003 environment ?

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/downloads/domain
rename.mspx

I am a little bit confused about the warnings i get from
other people. Is the reconstructing with ADMT the better
way, any hints or technical documents about this are
welcome !

Thanks
Christoph

Hi Christopher-
There has been an update for the domain rename tools, which specifically
targets the Exchange 2003 aspect. The official version of RENDOM that
supports renames in forests containing Exchange 2003 Service Pack 1
computers is available on Microsoft.com

Please repost if this does not help.

Hi Tim,

thanks for the answer, but i am searching for projects in
reality. Every answer i have heard is like the one of
Bob ... be careful and build a test environment. So for me
the rename tool is a more theoretical solution. Building
the test environment and than converting the online
environment with no turn-back I need a 100% secure
mechanism. The time for building a test environment and
doing the change is imho the same effort than make a new
installation of ADS.

I will be glad to hear any further comments !!

Regards
Christoph

Hi Christoph-

We do highly recommend that you set up a test environment that mimics your
production one to help plan this out first. This can help stumble across
any unique, unforeseen situations that are a result of your environment in
particular.

In my experience, one of the most common reasons I end up speaking with a
company directly is a result of a migration going in an unexpected manner
due to a lack of testing prior to implementation. I will now step off the
soap box :) .

Having said that, there is a link below with a case study of a company that
consistently uses this feature. If we can help assist any further please
repost.

We did a rename in a test lab. This client was large enough to warrant
several hundred apps running in a development test lab. We then had a ton
of problems with the custom-written applications. Authentication to the
workstations functioned properly.

We had the noted problems with Exchange (which I understand have been
mitigated).

The client made the decision to keep the same domain name.
